Favorite Working Media: What presents itself, what's called for

Personal Inspiration: My inspiration usually is influenced by my inner work, what's unfolding at the time, as well as the storyline or sense of the Trail each year. I am inspired by John King and the simple, nature-based potency of his work and of the other artists who contribute to the Trail. I like the accessibility of the Trail art and that anyone, but especially children, can walk away from it feeling empowered to go home and create their own art. An invitation to join in the fun is extended by the Trail. Will you come to the party?

Favorite Working Media: Anything

Personal Inspiration: My inspiration is a mixture of Colorado and John King, the trail's founder and guru. Having a brain-storming session with John is like having a psychodelic experience. Abstract ideas flow out of his mind and spark ideas in you that you didn't know you could have. I have been woodworking for many years making guitars and furniture but this is the first time I have made pieces for outside public consumption. When I first came to Colorado I was overwhelmed by the clear skies. During the day the sun is a constant companion and at night the stars always twinkle. My sundials celebrate the sun and how it gives us time and seasons.

Favorite Working Media: Encaustic & collage

Personal Inspiration: Painting & sculpting are very energetic processes for me. Moving in & out of the lines (physical or metaphorical) is paramount. Recognizeable objects are the result of a serendipitous paint event or collage process. The vigor of bold & frenzied brushmarks or sculptural construction. The aggressive scraping off of layers. The meditative periods of reflection needed to ascertain harmony of the parts, leading to a totality of the whole. Joy is profound when it can be conveyed from the heart. When I am in the mix of my creative process, I feel my own joy begin to bubble over.

Favorite Working Media: Interactive Intermedia Ecological Installation

Personal Inspiration: My Muse is driven by my hope for humankind learning the skills to be self-sufficient enough to live kindly and peacefully with earth and universe. Permaculture practice has wired me into a discipline of intuitive spontaneity, the conundrum of making art on automatic, working with Nature. I love entering serious life decisions with multi-dimensional humor using infinite senses. My TIKYSK (Things I Know You Should Know) is organic Art, is Life, earth ethics, chakra function, zen, love, survival. Art as Life process, Life process as Art. All experiences become Art. Because we live in a scientific quantitative era, intuition is suspect. If I have and follow intuition I am less led and less dead.

Favorite Working Media: Fused glass & mixed media painting

Personal Inspiration: I never know where a painting or glasswork will take me when I begin. It is always a journey into unfamiliar territory with an indefinite conclusion. Somewhat like the journey we all travel, not knowing with any certainty the outcome.

Favorite Working Media: Steel

Personal Inspiration: A search for "truth and beauty through an economy of means" is the underlying idea in my work. I am interested in arrangements of very simple shapes to create interesting compositions, primarily in fabricated steel. Tension, balance, the relationship of shapes, line and scale are major factors. "Negative space" (the shape and inclusion of the immediate area around the sculpture) is just as important to a piece as is the form itself. I have always attempted to emulate the superb craftsmanship of my professor and mentor Ben Goo of Arizona State University. I hope my work honors his teaching and example. Nonobjective work such as "Sentinel" deals with these aspects as the sculptor thinks and works in something approaching "pure form." The "Mayfly Pharaoh" piece on the trail was conceived and executed keeping all the above design elements in mind with, of course, the addition of "pure fun."

Sapan Rinpoche

Years on the trail: 2006 2007

Favorite Working Media: Multimedia, with Metal, Canvas, Papier Mache, Polycarbonates, Acrylic, Natural Found Materials, etc.

Personal Inspiration: A sycamore tree is one that is white on the outside and red on the inside. A "North American Sycamore" is a white person, on the outside, with indigenous orientation and "redness" on the inside. The motivation is from a multi-cultural point of view, with the colors white, red, yellow, green, blue and black as found in Native American, Vajrayana Buddhist (five Dhayana Buddha families) and African iconography. The "North American Sycamore Tribe" was founded in Washington State by Sapan Rinpoche in 1994 with the support of indigenous Elders from the North Coast Salish, Columbia Plateau and Plains Traditions.

Kristine Smock

Years on the trail: 2005 2006 2007

Favorite Working Media: Multi-media

Personal Inspiration: I am drawn to found objects I like to use cast off items in my pieces and to see if it is possible to transform them into something else. I enjoy recycling while I work and hope that the pieces are humorous , beautiful, or perhaps just goofie. I like to see what happens when I turn things upside down, and shake things a bit. I am constantly tempted to try new ideas and mediums and techniques. I've always wanted to make large concrete and mosaic forms, especially after numerous trips to Mexico, France and Italy. My inspiration comes spiritual art figures found in the churches, ancient architectural ruins, animals forms, human relations, and the natural world around me, to name a few.
